The community is elated as the MRAS Board members reversed their March 23rd decision at a special meeting on Thursday night. Many thanks to Emily. Her Facebook group, Save the Millarville Fair!, rallied the community. 676 members in 5 days is quite an accomplishment. See you all at the 2010 Fair and again, a big thank you to the MRAS Board members who made this happen.

Since the Priddis and Millarville Fair was suspended on March 23rd, I have received hundreds of emails and many, many phone calls from residents. All are saddened at the demise of the Fair for 2010 after 102 years, this would be the 103rd. Everywhere I go I hear stories about families who look forward to participating in this event every August. I felt it was time I spoke up and gave my thoughts. I am a member of the MRAS and thanks to Patty Webb have had the privilege of volunteering in the baking section which, I might add, is dangerous for a person with a sweet tooth – I tasted Emily’s Fair winning Saskatoon pie! The people I have met are so enthusiastic, warm and friendly and easy to work with. To think that this event will not go forward is just not right. I personally feel if a public meeting were held, the community would rally and find a way to go forward with the Fair this year!

On Friday, January 15th I had the good fortune to be invited by Christine Lederer to the Millarville Community School for its assembly. The Grade 1 class at MCS was concerned about the number of signs in the hamlet. Earlier in the year the residents requested a speed reduction from 40 km/h to 30 km/h and they were posted at the west and east entrances to Millarville. The Grade one class wrote council requesting more signs closer to the school to indicate the new speed. They sent great posters and a letter indicating that drivers were going too fast. The assembly was so much fun. It brought back memories of my 30 years of teaching. Principal Thorne entertained us with his “Art Linkletter” approach with an open mike where children express their thoughts with a little prompting form Mr. T. Highly entertaining. I presented the children with MD pins and a map of the 7 divisions in the MD where they will be able to locate where they live. Watch for a picture of them in the Western Wheel as Don Patterson came to the assembly too. A most enjoyable morning.
